A small, unexpected, sharp trigger unsettled me as the morning began under a flawless, bright blue sky, with sunlight spilling across the city’s concrete spines and shoulders.
I was here to do steady, necessary work of value to someone else, but an accidental, uncommunicated overlap exposed a rawness I rarely encounter these days.
I slipped into survival mode, relying on quick wit, steady humor, and a stream of comedy as if I were on stage. Outwardly, it entertained. Inwardly, I knew exactly what I was doing and why, and what I was feeling and processing. I accepted the experience as my own, but I disliked the parts of myself that I felt swirling inside me, as well as my awareness of my laughter-driven attempts…
