Rigetti has been named as the core industry partner at the new Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center (SQMS) led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermilab. SQMS is one of five national centers announced today by the White House to bring about transformational advances in quantum information science as part of the U.S. National Quantum Initiative.

The initiative provides the Center with $115 million over five years with the goal of building and deploying a beyond-state-of-the-art quantum computer based on superconducting technologies. SQMS will focus on optimizing coherence — the length of time that a qubit can effectively process information, and currently one of the most important limiting factors of quantum systems and devices. Understanding and mitigating sources of decoherence is critical to realizing next-generation quantum computers.

The Center will leverage Rigetti’s state-of-the-art fabrication facilities for manufacturing high-coherence superconducting qubits and scalable quantum integrated circuit architectures, as well as its full-stack expertise in building and deploying quantum computing capabilities over the cloud. Rigetti’s demonstrated track record in advancing scientific discoveries toward engineered systems will enable the Center to commercialize capabilities that will further the energy, economic and national security interests of the United States.

SQMS is a unique multidisciplinary collaboration that includes 20 partners from national laboratories, academic institutions and industry. The collaboration brings together world-leading expertise in all key aspects: from identifying qubit quality limitations at the nanometer scale to fabrication and scale-up capabilities into multi-qubit quantum computers to the exploration of new applications enabled by quantum computers and sensors.
