Most of us don’t think of ourselves as creative types, and certainly not on the level of the professionals and semi-professionals that make their living through posting online. But being a creator on social media doesn’t have a set definition or threshold that dictates who can contribute, and how much. And there’s no barrier to entry; if you want to enter the fray, all you need is time and energy, and the willingness to share your creativity with the world.

None of us are posting to social media just for ourselves, however, and establishing a presence on platforms requires a concerted and focused effort in order to gain followers. Here are some tips on how to find your niche as an online creator.

Find your passion. As much as anything else, people are drawn to creators that care deeply about whatever they’re chronicling. Even if your particular interest might seem like the most narrow and unique, there are undoubtedly others out there on the world wide web that share that interest, and probably a lot more than you think. Whatever it is you do, be sure that you enjoy it.

Find your audience. Putting your content online means putting yourself out there, and that requires going to where the people are. Part of that means finding the right platform for your particular flavor of content where people are more apt to find it. Once you’ve found a home, you can’t be afraid to try and promote yourself, particularly among audiences that are likely to be aligned with your interests.

Establish a brand. Most of the biggest brands online have become so by establishing their reputation for doing one thing and doing that thing well. As a creator, you want to establish with your audience what they can expect from you, and that requires consistency and hopefully quality. Figure out your hook, which is what you would tell people in a single sentence description of what you’re all about. And, stick with that as much as possible.

Engage. Part of the draw of seeing independent creators on social media is knowing that they’re real, relatable people; much closer to us than the stars we see in movies or on TV. Audiences can come to feel like they know the creators they follow online, and engaging with those that support you is a great way for creators to build loyalty and keep your audience feeling connected to you and what you’re doing.
