Som Energia: What about a bit of sustainable and renewable energy?

I’m happy to announce that Som Energia, the nonprofit cooperative that produces 100% green and renewable energy, is part of the Rigor Guild customers' family.

Som Energia's main activities are the commercialization and production of sustainable and renewable energy. They are committed to being the impulse for a change of paradigm towards 100% renewable energies.

During January, I had the pleasure to facilitate a 1-day workshop discussing how tech companies go from the most strategic part of vision and mission definition to the most low-level detail of the day-by-day of development teams. We manage to discuss how the Top Management defines the strategic yearly goals, how these goals are followed-up, how they go into quarter goals, and how such goals are the input to define a product and tech roadmap.

In the operative part, we review how to have the pulse of the team (1:1s, townhall meetings, KPIs, etc.), how to perform change management, the role of the Team Leads/Engineering Managers, how to perform effective retros, the role of the QAs, techniques to improve the bug management, Kanban vs. Scrum, and much more.

As in all the consultancies, all the sessions are recorded so all the team members can replay the best moments or onboard easily new members.

One of the key challenges: Anarchic Organizational Model

Because Som Energia is a cooperative company, the organization is way less hierarchical than any other start-up that I know, even the most leaner ones. This represents a challenge when decision-making. The most democratic the organization model is, the most facilitation effort is required to take the right decision.

This means that anyone in the team has to push for a decision, looking for consensus, pro/cons analysis, experimentation, and risk mitigation. An anarchic-alike organizational model is really interesting but requires more emotional and decision-making discipline, not only in the tech team but especially important in the product roadmap. As in the previously shared consultancy at KaveHome, Product Management is fundamental for Tech Teams.

As Tech Teams, we are at the final of the “production” chain. This means that any inefficiency before in the process will be transferred to the development team and it will impact the team performance. Having a clear prioritization mechanism, with a single entry point, will avoid focus losses and will help the development team to challenge if what is getting worked is the most important thing to do tracking it back to the vision and mission.

If you work around the north area of Catalonia, you love React, and/or Django and Python, take a look at their job vacancies: https://blog.somenergia.coop/som-energia/ofertas-de-trabajo/2021/12/oferta-de-feina-programador-a-python/, https://blog.somenergia.coop/destacados/2021/12/oferta-de-feina-programador-a-frontend/. I’m helping them and we may have the chance to meet.
