Everybody Votes Channel had Star Wars questions?!

Hi guys,

Hope you are all having a great 2018 so far. Thanks to everyone who has voted in our Everybody Votes Channel polls lately. It’s not like we have as many voters as Nintendo had, but we have added a feature that allows you to see how many voters voted on a poll when you see the results.

I would like to talk about the page we set up showing all of Nintendo’s poll results. It seems that more people like to vote rather than look at the results page, but it can be fun to look at all of the results.

Are you wondering how we gathered all these poll results? Nintendo still has the server up with all the polls on it, so we grabbed them all from there. We’re lucky and thankful we could get the results for all countries and languages.

Did you know that only 2 brand names have been mentioned in the Everybody Votes Channel on Nintendo’s polls? Nintendo didn’t mention brand names much in polls, and we aren’t going to be using them at all in our polls.

One of the two that were mentioned was “Star Wars”. Here’s the results for the poll in the United States:

I was wondering why Nintendo would mention these in the Channel. After Googling, I found a press release where LucasArts was partnering up with Nintendo to bring Star Wars content to the Wii:

The arrival of the first three games will be accompanied by additional Star Wars-themed content on other Wii channels throughout the week. The Check Mii Out Channel will invite people to submit their best Mii™ character renditions of classic Star Wars characters. On the Everybody Votes Channel, users can cast their votes to help settle old debates, such as the proper order to watch the six Star Wars films, and who fired first — Han Solo or Greedo?

They were also bringing some Star Wars SNES games to the Wii Virtual Console. The question about Han Solo or Greedo was actually mentioned in one of the promotional screenshots for the Everybody Votes Channel on Nintendo’s website, maybe they wanted people to think there would be more questions like this.

The other brand mentioned in the EVC was “American Idol”. I couldn’t find a press release for this one, but I’m sure they were partnering up as well. This was a question posted in 2007, when the series was really popular.

Countries outside the US (there would be different questions for each country in a region, so America, Europe and Japan) got different polls instead, probably because those countries weren’t familiar with it at the time.

Maybe Nintendo was trying to use brand names more in questions, but. never got the chance to partner up with more companies to do so. The American Idol questions were posted in 2007, and the Star Wars questions were posted in 2009.

In an interview with the developers of the Everybody Votes Channel, they said they wanted to avoid questions like “Who do you like better? Mario or Link” because it could confuse, a grandmother, for example (and might not know who Link is). Basically, they actually wanted everybody to be able to understand the questions and vote. So, it’s interesting they would post these.

Some of the early polls were different across countries because they mentioned the specific country. In the United States, these polls were posted:

10 or fewer: 54.0%

More than 10: 46.0%

How many US presidents can you name?

10 or fewer: 39.0%

More than 10: 61.0%

However, in Canada, these were the polls that were posted:

How many Canadian provinces have you visited?

4 or fewer: 67.6%

More than 4: 32.4%

How many Canadian prime ministers can you name?

8 or fewer: 77.7%

More than 8: 22.3%

In other countries, these were the polls that were posted (results are from Mexico):

Who was the best soccer player?

Pelé: 75.4%

Maradona: 24.6%

Which do you prefer, TV or books?

TV: 75.9%

Books: 24.1%

In America, there were a few different polls for US and Canada, but at some point they used the same questions for all countries in America (probably because it was more work to create different questions for multiple countries).

One question was repeated twice, for some reason, and the results changed a bit (results are from the US):

2007 version:

Do you think there is life on other planets?

Yes: 76.2%

No: 23.8%

2012 version:

Do you think there is life on other planets?

Yes, there is!: 60.5%

No way!: 39.5%

Finally, this is probably the dumbest question I’ve seen that Nintendo posted on the EVC (results are from the US):

Is a strawberry a fruit or vegetable?

Fruit: 92.1%

Vegetable: 7.9%

These are some of the interesting things I’ve found out by looking in the results. You might be able to find other interesting things by doing that, so I recommend you check out the results for yourself.
