One also needs collaboration to enhance competence and expand capabilities,” affirmed Sajid Mohammed, COO, Shipwaves.

“Our SaaS products helped us gain deep insights into our customer’s IT Landscape and how they interact with their logistics teams and key players. We believe that the TradeLens platform will truly elevate our value proposition, allowing us to interconnect with shippers, carriers & other stakeholders. The important factor here is the use of innovative technology that ensures security, trust and transparency,” he added.

Trade with Bangladesh opens doors for India’s non-basmati rice exports
The resumption of trade with Bangladesh through the West Bengal border has raised hopes among India’s non-basmati rice traders of getting fresh orders from the neighbouring country. Trucks carrying rice are currently going through the Petrapole-Benapole border, fulfilling orders which were placed prior to the Covid-19 outbreak. “Bangladesh largely buys non-basmati rice. We have come to know that Bangladesh will import rice from India this year,” said Vinod Kaul, executive director, All India Rice Exporters’ Association. “We are getting in touch with the Indian embassy in Bangladesh and Bangladesh embassy in New Delhi to get a clearer picture on this issue.” India had exported 7,599,552.15 metric tonnes of non-basmati rice worth Rs 21,184.85 crore in 2018–19.

Exporters facing GST refund issues as govt makes invoice matching compulsory for input tax credit
Many exporters are facing a working capital crunch as they have run into refund problems after a recent government circular said exporters would not be eligible for input tax credit refunds in cases where they are unable to match invoices from the vendors. This situation is a result of the government waiving off late fees for companies and suppliers to upload certain forms under the goods and service tax, tax experts said. That led to several cases where these forms were not uploaded, and exporters were unable to take input tax credit running into crores. As per the GST framework, tax credit cannot be availed until and unless a corresponding invoice is reflected on the government portal.

India opens new chapter in connectivity with Bangladesh via container shipping
India on Thursday (16 July) flagged off the first trial container ship from Kolkata to Agartala through Chattogram Port of Bangladesh, in a virtual ceremony opening a new chapter in sub-regional connectivity. This has been done under the Agreement on use of Chattogram and Mongla Ports for movement of India’s transit cargo through Bangladesh. Jawaharlal Nehru Port gets regulator’s nod to hike rates
State-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has won large rate hikes from the tariff regulator at a time when its volumes have plummeted by 31.38 per cent during the first quarter, putting the port authority in a dilemma over implementing the hike. The Tariff Authority for Major Ports (TAMP) has approved a rate hike of 19.03 per cent in vessel related charges (VRC) and 22.56 per cent each in container, bulk and liquid cargo related charges for a three-year period beginning August 3.The rates approved by the regulator will be indexed annually to the wholesale price index (WPI), a measure of costs, to the extent of 100 per cent. Westports launches world’s first wireless container check system
Westports Holdings Berhad (Westports) launched its new Remote Physical-Check System (RPS) on 9 July, when the Malaysian minister of transport, YB. Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong made an official visit to Westports Malaysia, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Westports. Every container that is being unloaded from or loaded onto a vessel has to be verified at the wharf. The RPS allows the verification process to be performed via video analytic cameras installed on the quay cranes structure instead of having stowage clerks physically walking around container boxes performing the same function onsite at the wharf. Westports RPS is the world’s first in implementing this technology via a wireless network and infrastructure.

Rotterdam introduces PIN-free container handling
Port of Rotterdam (PoR) Authority has announced that various parties will be launching a pilot project on the handling and the release of containers without a PIN code, this week. The project revolves around a new application, Secure Container Release, which replaces the PIN code with a digital signal, explains PoR, which describes the solution as significantly less susceptible to fraud, as “it is not only intended to make container handling more efficient, but also safer.” Participants in the three-month trial include CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, ONE, Hutchison Ports ECT Rotterdam, Rotterdam Fruit Wharf, Milestone Fresh, VTO, Portmade and the application developer T-Mining. PoR Authority said that every year, millions of containers are unloaded in the port, from where they are forwarded to destinations in the hinterland. Collecting these containers in the port is a complicated process, according to an announcement, during which shipping companies, freight forwarders, transport firms and terminals need to work closely together to ensure the swift and safe release of this freight.
