Get It All Done Today With Time Blocking

Use time blocking in your day to increase your productivity and focus more in your day. Time blocking allows you to schedule your day into small groups of time for pre-planned tasks. Which eliminates distractions and increases your focus, allowing you to maneuver through your tasks with ease.

I will be discussing:

1. Determine Your Energy Cycles
2. Schedule Enough Time
3. Eliminate Unnecessary Distractions

If I could some up this book into one word it would have to be the word Enlightened: having or showing a rational, modern, and well-informed outlook.

1. Determine Your Energy Cycles

Think of how your energy and workflows throughout the day before scheduling your tasks into 30-minute slots. Do you know when you have the most uninterrupted time in your day? If so this is the best time to schedule a series of time blocks in your day.

Also, keep in mind what time during the day you tend to have the most energy for grueling tasks you have. If you tend to suffer from an afternoon slump, then try not to schedule your work that requires a lot of focus. Ideally, you want to accomplish smaller or less important tasks like emptying or replying to emails and other minor tasks.

2. Schedule Enough Time

Although time blocking is highly beneficial, you still have to ensure that you are mapping out enough time for a certain task. For example if you know that you have a large project that will require a lot of time for you, don’t think that you squeeze everything into a 30-minute block of time. What you can do is think of the amount of time you actually need to get it done and try to finish it early, like if it’s a 4-hour task try to get it done in 3 ½ minutes.

It’s ok to underestimate how much time something may take you, but we also don’t want to run out of time in our time blocks. And run behind schedule which is why should also include time buffer zones, which is a 30-minute block that is unassigned. So that you can fully focus on the task instead worrying if you’re running behind your time schedule and even recharge before your next task.

3. Eliminate Unnecessary Distractions

If you truly want time blocking to work for you in your life, you have to commit to eliminating what is distracting you from getting stuff done. Only you know what truly is stopping you from completing what you need to get done, get real with yourself and reduce the distractions.

You can put your phone in another room or use Airplane/Do Not Disturb Mode to minimize the number of times you spend on your phone. I recommend keeping some Post-it notes for whatever random reminders pop up in your head during your time blocks. If you are need of an intense productivity schedule then I recommend you try doing a power hour. Which is 90 minutes of power, so that you can thoroughly focus on your work.
