1st Strokes is the debut generative art collection for

and the first batch of membership NFTs for Rithm Art, an algorithmic art community.

After helping to build

on , I was introduced to generative art. I was amazed by the ability to algorithmically convey the complexity of the world and imagination through mathematics, physics and logic. It opened up my ability to express creativity in a space that is typically considered dry and rote. After helping to establish as one of the 1st Decentralized Autonomous Organizations on Avalanche, I saw an opportunity for another first. The creation of the first community dedicated towards the support of algorithmic art, such as, generative and A.I. art on .

Thus, 1st Strokes was designed as a means to introduce on-chain generative art to the Avalanche community. The interesting aspect of on-chain generative art is that it makes each piece and the reveal special. Thus, the act of the mint draws each owner into the piece of the work. The transaction hash / receipt from minting is used a the seed to create a unique expression of the work. That means every mint is a 1:1 that is uniquely tied to on-chain activity. This interaction is one of the most interesting parts of the mint.

1st Strokes is designed with the intent of making the viewer part of my artistic journey. The beginning of my artistic journey is with a stroke. As I thought about the potential of programmatic art, I wanted to bridge the natural depth and technical beauty of calligraphy brushes with programming. Thus, 1st Strokes takes a lot of its inspiration from ink painting and calligraphy brushes.

What often stands out in calligraphy is often bold lines that vary in their depth. Depending on the ink there could be bleeding on the canvas. The path is a substantial part of a paint stroke. However, there is also a consideration of the brushes bristles. Therefore, in the implementation 4 aspects were focused on:

  • Brush Path
  • Brush Selection
  • Brush Bristles
  • Ink Dip

The process for creation will be discussed a bit further in the next piece.
