Although familiar with the series and its characters, few have ever wondered why Monica’s apartment was purple. There is a reason for it, too.
According to designer John Shaffner , how he really had to fight the rest of the crew to get his team’s desire to use purple.
- Nobody liked the idea until I did a little experimental painting, he says.
According to the man, color really matters a lot to the identity of the series.
- It creates the whole identity. When a man switches to a channel, sees a purple color, he realizes watching Friends and stays on the channel.
According to Shaffner, the bold choice of colors should be the thing that sets Friend apart from other comedy series. He took a risk in making the choice, but it was worth it.
