“I come here to get the experience of a good cup of coffee, not just a good cup of coffee.”

We all know coffee is a necessity when studying. For students that are tired of Sac States’s “designated study zones” like the over crowded Library, the Academic Resource Center, the University Union and the Starbucks on campus, here are some local places that are distraction-free and perfect for getting work done.

Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters

Old school and rustic, this shop is made for the reading studier. It has no Wi-Fi, so Instagram, Twitter and Facebook will not be a distraction. Sorry, but you can’t post about the great coffee you’ll be drinking on your favorite social media outlet unless you want to use up all your cellular data. If you need to sit down and laser focus in on a book, this is the place to go. It may not have the name and popularity of Starbucks, but true coffee lovers will appreciate the ambiance of the shop and the quality of the coffee they serve. They are known for choosing producers who are as passionate about growing coffee as they are about roasting and brewing. Since the coffee they brew makes an appearance at other coffee shops and restaurants in Sacramento, Chocolate Fish is widely considered as the motherland of all coffee shops. 4749 Folsom Blvd (down the street from school in East Sacramento).

Son of a Bean Coffee and Art

Son of a Bean Coffee and Art is a unique addition to the Coffee & Art Woodlake community. Unlike their punny name, their coffee is no joke. This family owned and operated coffee shop is the home away from home for coffee connoisseurs in Sacramento. Locally brewed coffee from Chocolate Fish is served here, and the shop currently hosts an open mic on Wednesday and a Friday Night Jam Night featuring selected performers from the open mic night. So if you’re looking for a some background music while you study, hit this place up! It may be a drive from campus, about 6.4 miles away, but not only are you helping support a local business, there is usually not a huge crowd so you can study in peace. 1029 Del Paso Blvd (in Old North Sacramento).

The founder of Temple Coffee and Tea had a vision: to offer good vibes, great service and exceptionally well-prepared coffee. What else could a coffee lover ask for?

These cafes (located in downtown, midtown, Arden Park and Davis) are quiet and composed with their delicious coffees and numerous teas they offer. You won’t have to wait in line for what feels like a half an hour like you would at the Starbucks on campus.

Temple in Arden Park (at Fair Oaks and Munroe) is only 1.6 miles away from campus, about a five-minute drive. For a quiet place to focus, Temple is a great study spot around noon or 5 p.m. which seem to be the slower times.

The Naked Lounge

Not only does this shop serve splendid coffee but they also have a number of beers on draft. The crowd is generally small and never too rowdy. Look out for the open mic nights Wednesday through Friday if you need a dead silent spot to study. Just like Son of a Bean, there will be live performers. If you listen to music while you study already, then the soothing background music will not be a problem for you. 1111 H Street in Downtown Sacramento

Tupelo Coffee House

Owned and operated by The Naked Lounge, this place is crawling with students who want to escape the craziness of campus for a spot to take a break in between their day and study. The recent makeover of the shop provides more seating and is designed for studying. It has power outlets that run under many of the window seats. The snacks and solid wifi are also a plus. This spot is pretty popular so you may even run into classmates which can be helpful if a homework question pops up. 5700 Elvas Ave — a hop, skip, and a jump from campus.
