David Bowie Helped my Mental Health

As a teenager, I suffered from depression. I woke up most days with a sense of ennui and hopelessness. My dark moods informed the music I listened to and led me to 1980s gloom rock like Nick Cave, Bauhaus, the Damned and the Chameleons. Occasionally I encountered albums so bleak I referred to them as “snuff music.” Among these were the Cure’s Pornography, Joy Division’s Closer and David Bowie’s Low.
