Republicans make moves on Obamacare repeal

The senate started making moves to repeal Obamacare this week. They’re simultaneously facing pressure to find a replacement that will provide a better healthcare solution for the country.

What’s the big deal?

This was mostly a strategic vote but its passing has made subsequent voting easier for the Republican-controlled Senate to repeal Obamacare. Moving forward, instead of needing 60 votes to pass new bills, they’ll only need 52 — much easier since Republicans hold …52 seats. So logistics are getting sorted out, but Republicans still don’t have a replacement for Obamacare ready even with continued pressure from voters and President-elect Trump.

Why should I care?

If you pay taxes in the U.S., the likely repeal of Obamacare and its replacement will affect your money and potentially your healthcare bills. We won’t know how until there is a clear new plan (under Trump). Once repealed, 30 million Americans could become uninsured until there is a replacement.

…and?

Since we’re a young startup that doesn’t (yet) provide health insurance 😬 our team has to consider the health insurance marketplace (aka Obamacare) to get coverage. The message from our advisor was, “Don’t f$#% around! Get coverage ASAP because we have no idea what’s going to happen.”
