YouTube opened a whole new world of possibilities, arming masses with the ability to upload and view videos. Although this is true about the internet phenomenon as a whole, juxtapose it with social media posts sans moving pictures, and you get the point whole and square. In under seventy years, the TV moved from an old school black-and-white CRT device to an LED screen with a massively wider range of features. YouTube, on the other hand, has come to what it is today in just over 14 years. Needless to say, users of the service played an indisputably major role in this boom. And in the age when anything was literally possible, fame occupying a prominent segment of said anything, YouTube users — uploaders, to be more specific — tapped into this opportunity to realize their dreams of international eminence. While there is the usual how-to, educational, or the typical funny animal (or children) videos, some YouTubers have gone to (then) uncharted extents to gain views, “thumbs ups” and subscribers. Here are some silly, crazy or funny (in a sense) instances of things that YouTubers have done for fame. We’ll start off with more dangerous video ideas, tapering off to casual and funny ones to the end.

  1. Into the Cola Pool

MIXXID’s Jan 2017 video featured the “PRANKSTER” tossing himself into an overground plastic pool filled with 13,600 liters of cola while having taped his body >75% with Mentos. As other experiments also show, reactions take longer, and he popped out as soon as he could (perhaps thanks to the cold). And maybe that wasn’t enough Mentos.

2. Epic Scale Energy

Epic Meal Time is a YouTube cooking channel that could be seen as parodying mainstream cooking by building ginormously calorie-dense meals, which the makers then are filmed eating. Cue in some epic background music. Some of their uploads include their “1 Million Calorie Lasagna” and the “100-Pound Pizza”.

3. Ontheroofs

These guys scale on to the roofs. If you haven’t got clammy palms already, go watch them photograph their climbs — from train tops to the Lotte World Tower (555m), to the Shanghai Tower (632m).

4. Bad Lip Reading

It’s like the whisper challenge turned on its head. Not only was this innovative, but it’s been amusingly popular enough to have survived for 8 years now. And when you’d hear celebrities — from actors to politicians, to cartoons — talking absolute gibberish with the right expressions, you’d not doubt its fun.

5. Snap those Earphones

…and give them AirPods. In the last month, there have been at least 11 pranks where YouTubers cut people’s earphones to hand them AirPods. The video faring best has 40 million views and 1.5 million likes.

6. Shipping Yourself

While there have been strange challenges like downing a spoonful of cinnamon, there are stranger things like trying to (and allegedly succeeding every time) mail yourself to another place. In a box. YouTubers SSSniperWolf, RiceGum and Killem, among a score of others, have tried and succeeded in mailing themselves. Gotta go gulp in some air.

7. Pranks

From elevator pranks to swapping twins, pranksters over the world have thought of inestimable tricks to play on their friends, family, and strangers. An instance of this is the “Escaped Prisoner Prank” by ThatWasEpic and the Stokes Twins.

Although YouTube has occasionally displayed its dark side which we haven’t discussed here, learning about these crazy things YouTubers have done for views and fame definitely makes one thing clear — entertainment, today, has mutated enormously since the 2000s.
