Driving at night can be challenging, whether it is a car or a bike. The reduced visibility and tiredness can make your journey more hazardous. Try not to travel during the night as much as possible unless it is necessary and urgent. But don’t worry. Here are the 10 essential tips to follow that will help you.

  1. Check Your Lights: Before hitting the road after sunset, take a moment to check all your lights — headlights, taillights, and turn signals are perfectly working. Proper illumination ensures that other drivers can see you and helps you spot hazards ahead.
  2. Clean Your Windshield: A clean windshield is crucial for good visibility, especially at night. Dust, dirt, and stains can decrease your visibility. Keep your windshield clean both inside and out.
  3. Turn off Your Dashboard Lights: Your dashboard lights can be distracting and block your night vision. Turn off or dim them to a comfortable level, so they don’t interfere with your ability to see the road ahead clearly.
  4. Follow the Speed Limit: It may be tempting to speed up when the roads seem to be empty during the night. But driving at extreme speeds at night can be dangerous. Stick to the speed limit and adjust your speed based on road conditions and visibility.
  5. Keep a Safe Distance: Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. The darkness can make it harder to judge distances. So, you should have enough time to react if the driver ahead brakes suddenly.
  6. Use High Beams Wisely: High beams can improve visibility but use them wisely. Switch to low beams when approaching other vehicles to avoid blinding them. Remember to dip your high beams when overtaking another vehicle closely.
  7. Take Breaks if Tired: Tiredness can affect your reaction time and decision-making ability. If you start feeling drowsy, pull over in a safe area and take a short break. Grab a tea or coffee to refresh yourself before getting back on the road.
  8. Watch Out for Wildlife: Animals are more active at night, increasing the risk of collisions. Be cautious when driving in rural or forest areas. Keep an eye out for reflective eyes on the roadside and slow down if you spot any wildlife.
  9. Plan Your Route: Familiarize yourself with the route that you will be traveling. Know the route and potential hazards to safely navigate, especially in areas that you are not familiar with.
  10. Stay Alert and Focused: Driving at night requires extra concentration. Avoid distractions like texting or adjusting the radio. Stay focused on the road, scanning for potential hazards such as pedestrians, animals, or debris.

By following these 10 essential tips, you can make night driving safer for yourself and others. However, if it is raining heavily, I strongly recommend cancelling your journey. Remember, safety should always be your top priority on the road, irrespective of the time of day.

Stay alert, stay focused, and arrive at your destination safely. Happy “night” journey!
