That is one of the weird and wonderful things about technology, isn’t it? It can’t be held back. While there’s still some debate regarding the circumstances under which 8K televisions offer tangible benefits to consumers, manufacturers are forging ahead anyway by making plenty of new models available at lower prices than ever. LG knows that not many people can afford its top-notch 8K OLED TVs, yes, but that there’s also bound to be some interest for 8K among early adopters who want to go for big screens — so it’s offering a premium 8K LED/LCD option as well. It’s the NANO99 series which features LG’s NanoCell technology and consists of two models: a 75-inch and a 65-inch one.

The whole point LG is trying to make with these two TVs is that they can co-exist alongside the extremely expensive OLED 8K models because they offer many of the same benefits for about 4 times less money: the 75-inch model’s RRP is set to around €5000 instead of €25000 for the 77-inch OLED model. The difference is staggering. So… what’s the catch?

I’ve spent time with the 75-inch model of the NANO99, pairing it with a PS5, a loaned Xbox Series X and a top-end PC, as well as a quality UHD BD player, trying to figure out what corners have been cut — well, apart from…
