More and more, hotels are making wellness an integral part of the guest experience — rather than a mere bullet point in a list of amenities. Still, for many frequent travelers who bounce between various cities and states, finding a hotel that functions as both a place to eat and workout well can be like finding a needle in a haystack…

Or is it? We believe in the age-old adage of “Seek and ye shall find.” That’s we why we’ve launched our Stay Strong series. These mini-guides highlight individual hotels as well as the workout facilities and restaurants around them that make eating well and working out a breeze.

To kick things off, let’s begin with the DoubleTree Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile. This newly renovated hotel has undergone some major changes — especially in the areas of fitness. Here are ten ways to stay strong at this Chicago hotel.

#1: Book a Five Feet to Fitness Room. Two years ago Hilton launched its new in-room fitness concept, Five Feet to Fitness™, and the DoubleTree Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile is the first Hilton property in Chicago to feature this private workout option. Six guest rooms feature over 11 different pieces of fitness equipment and accessories including an indoor cycling bike, sandbells, Bosu ball, yoga mat, medicine balls, free weights, a foam roller and more. The incredible thing about the Five Feet to Fitness™ rooms is that they offer plenty of space to workout on your own terms. A touch-screen Fitness Kiosk with over 200 fitness videos and a hydration station are also included in each room. And the best part? These rooms are fairly affordable, typically costing an extra $15 to $20 per night depending on the date and occupancy rates, of course.

#2: Hit the Fitness Center. If you can’t book a Five Feet to Fitness™ room, the DoubleTree’s fitness center is a very good second option for the frequent traveler who likes to workout. Compared to most hotel fitness centers, it’s fairly roomy and bright with a great assortment of equipment. Any hotel gym with a cable station, a decent amount of stationary bikes and treadmills, and a broad range of dumbbells is pretty great in our book!

#3: Grab a Snack in the Lobby. On your way out the door, stop by Doubletree’s Made Market to stock up on snacks or even a quick meal for the day. Some fairly good options include RX Bars, Chef’s Cut Beef Jerky, Earnest Oatmeal, Greek yogurt, and assorted salads. It’s also where you can get your Starbucks fix, if that’s what you need to get going in the morning.

#4: Stop by Whole Foods. If you aren’t satisfied with the options available at Made Market, you’ll be overjoyed to find a Whole Foods just two blocks away from the hotel. It’s an ideal place to grab a quick breakfast or lunch for the office, and perhaps a few items to stock the mini-fridge in your hotel room.

#5: Hit the Lakefront. Chicago’s beautiful lakefront is just two blocks to the east of the DoubleTree Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile. Weather permitting, fit in a nice walk or run by heading north toward Lincoln Park or south toward the Museum Campus.

#6: Get Your Orangetheory Fix. Members of #orangetheorynation, rejoice! The Streeterville location is just two blocks away from the hotel. The schedule offers options for early morning and late-night workouts, with classes beginning as early as 5:00 AM and as late as 8:05 PM on weekdays.

#7: Take a class at SL Personal Training: This small personal training studio offers unique group classes like Kettle Bells and Boxing Fusion 101. At only $15 per class, it’s an ideal way to receive group training from fitness and boxing experts.

#8: Fit in Crossfit: One of the newer boxes in the city, MagMile Crossfit, offers ten classes per day starting as early as 5:00 AM and running as late as 8:30 PM. Drop-in classes are $27 per session or $80 for an entire week.

#9: Wine and dine at Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab: Less than half a mile from the DoubleTree Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile is Like most seafood joints, one of Chicago’s most popular steak and seafood restaurants offers some great light options like the scallop and shrimp ceviche, Joe’s Chop Salad, and the grilled seafood platter. Grab your team or a client for dinner. Or you know, just enjoy a nice, quiet meal by yourself.

#10: BBQ at Gyu-Kaku: It’s easy to overdo it at a Japanese BBQ, but Gyu-Kaku is ideal if you’re following a Keto or gluten-free diet. (The restaurant also offers gluten-free marinades.) Order lean cuts like the Bistro hanger steak or filet mignon and pair with an Avocado Salad.

This is just a taste of what the DoubleTree Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile and the surrounding area has to offer the frequent traveler who wants to stay fit, healthy, and strong in Chicago.
