The 47th edition of the Copa America — which must have happened in 2020 but was eventually delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, kicked off on Sunday as hosts Brazil took on their opponents Venezuela at the Mane Garrincha stadium. The tournament has surrounded itself with controversies related to the alarming COVID-10 figures in Brazil and the governing body CONMEBOL’s move to proceed with the event anyway. What’s even more absurd is that the same CONMEBOL had moved the tournament out of Argentina & Colombia citing the rising number of cases as a reason only a couple of weeks ago.

Despite all the controversies, the tournament kicked off as the Brazil Supreme Court gave its nod for the conduction of the competition behind closed doors and bio bubbles, the competition officially kickstarted on June 13, 2021. At Roanuz Football API, we are exclusively covering the Copa America 2020 and are providing high-quality, reliable and fast data to sports & fantasy applications. Coming back, as the tournament is set to complete its first week, our team here at Roanuz Football API analysed how the teams fare and what are their best chances.

Before we get into the groups and the teams present, we fairly ascertain that the defending champions Brazil are the strong favourites to win the tournament. Following them closely behind is Argentina, with Lionel Messi aiming to win his first International trophy for his country. While it’s hard to write off Chile, Colombia and Uruguay from the contender’s list, Venezuela and Bolivia have only bleak prospects to get their hands on the trophy.

Group A

Teams: Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Bolivia.

Two of the Group A fixtures have so far been completed. As Argentina managed a 1–1 draw against Chile, thanks to an amazing Free Kick Goal by Messi in the first one, Paraguay thrashed Bolivia 3–1 in the second fixture. As our Tournament Points Table API informs, Paraguay is currently sitting at the top after securing their first win at Copa America after six years. They are followed by Argentina and Chile whose fixture ended in a draw. With Uruguay yet to play a game, this points table provides not much information at the moment to draw any inferences.

Group B

Teams: Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and Ecuador.

If recent form and results are the metrics to go by, Group B is certainly a more difficult group to be in than Group A. Historically too, the teams in Group B boast a total of 12 Copa America titles. As seen from the responses of our Tournament Points Table API, Brazil stands at the top of the table with two wins out of their two appearances. The team has almost sealed its place in the Quarterfinals. Brazil is followed by Colombia, who have a win and a draw as the outcomes of the two matches they have played.

The developments that have happened over the last week in the tournament are still in a nascent stage, and almost all the teams stand a chance to disrupt the table and make a mark in the tournament.
