“From the Devs”: The Benefits to Successful Collaboration, and How to Get There by goat292

Developers work together during the RDC2018 Game Jam to produce an award-winning game.

Some of the most successful and highest earning creations on Roblox are the result of developers working together to make a game that goes beyond the capabilities or skills of a single developer. The 2018 Egg Hunt was created by a team of over five developers; Asimo3089 and Badcc worked together to create Badimo, the studio most known for Jailbreak, and BlockFaceBob and BlockFaceSteve co-founded Block Evolution Studios. Roblox makes it easier for groups to collaborate with the group game feature, which allows multiple developers to work on a game at the same time, use the same assets, share profits, and receive credit.

Effective collaboration and communication are crucial to creating successful group games, whether team members are collaborating in person or online. When a member publishes an edit to the game, the changes will overwrite whatever is in the game’s slot. In order to prevent developers from overwriting each other’s work, group members should effectively coordinate. There are several strategies to cultivate cohesion:

Establish Vision
Choose a goal and establish a vision. If team members are excited by the goal, they will be inspired to accomplish it. They will collaborate more effectively if the vision for the game is clear. This may involve brainstorming before you begin creating the game and breaking down the goal into smaller steps. You might also choose to add deadlines to the process to establish a productive workflow.

Assign Responsibility and Communicate
Responsibilities and tasks should be divided and assigned to group members. In the Group Admin page, the Members tab allows group owners to assign and change roles, while the Roles tab allows them to create new roles. Default roles include Owner, Admin, Member, and Guest. People often assign responsibilities based on individual strengths and experiences. Responsibilities should be clearly communicated to all team members so that developers don’t overwrite other group members’ work. If each person understands their role and reports their progress to others, they will more likely achieve their goal. Quick meetings and progress reports can help. In these check-ins, you can review goals, set new ones, assess progress, and share thoughts. Communication is key to not only establish group cohesion but also to resolve issues that may arise. If a conflict arises, group members should identify the cause of the conflict and work together to resolve it.

Engage Effectively
Engage with team members and listen to feedback. Group cohesion results when team members are honest with each other and establish trust. If they engage with each other and share concerns, express excitement, and ask for help when necessary, the group can tackle issues more successfully. On the Group Main Page, the shout section can be used for group updates and the wall section can be used for group discussions. Additionally, tools such as Slack and Skype offer easy ways to communicate. Project planning tools like Trello and Microsoft Planner help track others’ work.

Collaborating with people who have different skills and experiences that you can be extremely beneficial. They can provide you with a different perspective and enhance creativity and problem-solving. Teamwork can also bring people much joy and increase reflection for your own talents. Whether or not you decide to work with others or independently, learning how to best collaborate is an important skill to have in the future, whether it may be working with family members, co-workers, or friends.
