A zero-tolerance policy for bad managers

Jerks, egomaniacs, and pushovers beware: More and more prospective employees use sites like Glassdoor to decide where to work.

And guess what many, if not most, negative reviews focus on? Bad managers and leaders. These negative reviews strike fear into the hearts of recruiters –– that’s a good thing, because 50 million Americans suffer under a bad boss. It’s a travesty.

And getting rid of bad bosses is doable –– select the right managers, develop them, and manage out the bad ones.

Yet, organizations are way too slow to fire bad bosses. This has many causes –– fear, excessive focus on short-term performance, ignorance, apathy, etc.

They tolerate bad managers.

How about flipping this: Could your company institute a “zero-tolerance policy for bad managers?”

It might look like this: Start seriously judging (not measuring) manager effectiveness. Empower managers of managers to make hard decisions, even if it hurts short-term results. Watch your employees cheer and your Glassdoor reviews improve.

What do you think? Does your company tolerate bad managers? How about a zero-tolerance policy for bad managers?
