Managers don’t sleep well

We found manager click rates on articles about sleep (and stress) were far higher than average.

Every day at Jhana, we sift through mountains of information on management best (and worst) practices to help inform companies about the struggles their first-level managers face. We then incorporate that information into (among many other things) our weekly management newsletter –– an email with management tips and insights that we’ve sent to every learner on our platform since 2012.

As you can imagine, that’s a lot of emails! So when a particular article racks up unusually high clicks and interest, we pay attention.

One recent email caught our eye with the amount of interaction it generated.

The specific tip in that email that got all the glory?

“One simple strategy to clear your mind so you can sleep: Get up and write down what’s keeping you awake at night.”

A pretty straightforward statement, but one that struck a chord. Not only did click rates on that tip set a new company record, we heard directly from managers about how much that piece resonated. Clearly, there are a lot of managers out there losing z’s!

While they’re not all record breakers, our articles on burnout and work/life balance are consistently popular among managers, and for good reason. Being a manager can be incredibly stressful –– more so for new managers, whom companies often unwittingly set up to fail by not following up on promotion with critical training and support.

Our research team at Jhana has already uncovered some fascinating insights into the daily manager experience in a study that followed a small cohort of managers from “when the alarm goes off, to when the head hits the pillow.”

But what about the nights when a manager’s head hits the pillow…but sleep never comes? Something else for us to consider!
