Song Showdown: And the Angels Sing
A Rate-A-Record prompt
My love for Rate-A-Record stories is well known by now (I’ve written 113 of them over four years), and my inability to resist a writing prompt/challenge is almost pathological. Thus, when Buddy Gott combined the two recently, I knew that resistance was futile.
The prompt is a straightforward one: your favorite songs with “angel” in the title. I expected to knock this one out fairly quickly, but as so often happens, I ran down a rabbit hole and struggled with what songs to include.
The most obvious — since I include Springsteen in everything — is “The Angel,” from his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., but it’s not my favorite about angels. The next most obvious would be Morrissey song “Angel, Angel, Down We Go Together” (since The Smiths had no songs with “angel” in the title), but Alex Markham stole that one in his answer to the prompt.
Even so, there are still plenty of angel songs that I love that I can include, and below are a few of them. Give them a listen and then rate them in the comments using the Terry Barr/American Bandstand scale of 35 to 98.
