The presidential election is now behind us and unity was once again a bridge too far for America; it’s almost impossible to believe that exactly 40 years ago, Ronald Reagan won 49 of 50 states, won the electoral vote 525 to 13, and won the popular vote by 16.8 million. Anything resembling such a national consensus may be a pipe dream for the foreseeable future, but hope springs eternal. Personally, I have friends and family that are celebrating today as well as friends and family still curled up in the fetal position in the same spot they were around 1:00 this morning. Suffice it to say that Thanksgiving will likely be tense again this year.

If you wonder how, after nearly ten years of madness, I still know people on both sides, it’s because I have lived both in the city and the woods, can actually have conversations that don’t involve politics, and (most importantly) am a writer who needs dialogue I can steal. It hasn’t always been easy, but it can be done.

Because I am a creature of habit, when I got up this morning I read a psalm, played “Born to Run,” and bowed toward Hemingway’s final resting place, just like any other day. It’s clearly not any other day, however, and the only thing I can think of that may at least distract folks…
