The camp was blissful and inspiring!

December is a month full of happiness and celebrations. People travel to different locations with different features to have fun and experience new things. In Kenya, we have several wonderful tourist attractions such as Maasai Mara National Reserve which is characterized by “Great Migration” when thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle travel to and fro of Serengeti, Lake Nakuru which is known for its huge flocks of pink flamingos, Malindi which is well known for its rich trading traditions, melting pot of cultures and cuisines and where travelers or tourists come to sun on the white sands of Watamu Beach and dive the coral reef.

And now, the most visited tourist attraction site in Kenya, Mombasa which is a multicultural tourist magnet. With coral reefs fringing the coast for about 480 kilometres hence providing fantastic scuba-diving opportunities. Not to forget the 16th century Fort Jesus — The only fort maintained by the Portuguese on the Swahili Coast, and is recognised as a testament to the first successful attempt by a Western power to establish influence over the Indian Ocean Trade. The Mombasa town is also known for its luxurious hotels, hot climate (since it is a lowland, at the sea level), intense trading activities, strong Swahili culture and souvenir shops.

Hence, this December the ROCK family attended a blissful and deterrent camp at the Coast of Mombasa city to experience and enjoy some of the above described features. We had originally planned to get to Naivasha but due to some logistical changes we had to move our trip to Mombasa which is equally beautiful and exciting.

The camp was full of fun and teachings. From swimming, eating a variety of food, travelling, life-changing discussions, to guest speakers and entertainers.

ROCK students having some good time at the ocean
It was always a good time at the beach; being pushed by the mild waves.
We can’t forget to share this sector: food was always in plenty and in variety.

We had a chance to meet one of the most celebrated Kenyan media personalities, Johnson Mwakazi. From the slums of Kibera way up to being one of the best news anchors in Kenya, Johnson Mwakazi motivated us by telling us his success story and some of the mistakes that he made on his way to success. He led us in an activity which was called “Finding your purpose on earth and giving thanks and gratitude” which really helped most of us. Each and every ROCK Kenya student agreed to practice gratitude giving everyday.

Other inspirations and motivations were given by the camp organizers and some of the topics that we covered include “Keep pushing until you win it”, “You aren’t determined by where you come from but where you are going”, “Believe in yourself”, “How to work S.M.A.R.T” among other topics. The topics are rarely taught in our schools and are of great importance to young people like us. Therefore, we consider ourselves above others in the community after going through the training of that camp. We plan to take these lessons home and share them with our family and community. We are always striving for positive change and with these new lessons we can bring more awareness to our society.

We also had the chance of being entertained by the award winning and 2017 best gospel act, Eko Dydda. Eko Dydda, with his electrifying performances and tough dance moves, he made all of us show our innermost molar teeth.
