Around the beginning of December, our group of eight middle school students made the decision to team up and try to defeat the abusive use of paper, ink, and other materials at our school by utilizing the technology around us. As eighth-graders, we have been able to differentiate our favorite and most effective classes with those that stick with the traditional paper and pencil. This idea would be the foundation of our World Affairs Challenge project for our Social Studies and Language Arts Block class. Fortunately, we discovered Rocketbook, which quickly became the most exciting and innovative aspect of our project.

In our presentation, we outlined the negative environmental impacts of using paper and the positive outcomes of utilizing technology in schools. As most of you know, the production of one single ream of paper requires mass amounts of oil and water and increases deforestation. On the other hand, Chromebooks and iPads are reusable, clean, and efficient and provide educational programs that can boost engagement and collaboration and support individual learning strategies.

At our school, in Colorado, each student is supplied with a Chromebook as a sixth-grader, meaning everyone has access to those online programs. Which begs the question, “Why don’t teachers just stop using so much paper already?” This presents the main flaw of eliminating paper in the classroom. It is proven that writing things down helps your brain memorize information and data faster.

That’s when Rocketbook became the perfect ending to our presentation. This selection of reusable notebooks utilizes technology, reduces paper and material use, and shapes diligent students. About four members of our group decided to get Rocketbooks and try them out. After just a couple of weeks with my Rocketbook Fusion, I saw my note-taking skills advance dramatically. The dotted paper allows math students to easily draw diagrams and graphs for geometry or algebra, and the calendar pages are a simple strategy to staying organized without using planners that fall apart and waste paper. Also, scanning your work takes away any worries about running out of space or losing your notes and assignments. We’re also big fans of the colorful packs of Frixion pens that you can purchase. They make writing a lot more fun.

All of those impressive elements of the Rocketbook Fusion and other Rocketbook products also appealed greatly to our peers. After we presented our solution to creating a more sustainable school for our class, a collection of educators and students individually approached us to ask more questions about Rocketbook. It was a hit!

A big shout out to LMS students: Perry Bolles, Ainsley Coogan, Jackson Hubbard, Beatrice Lighthiser, Bodhi Malin, William Miles, Ben Stevenson, and Mac Zwolfer for their dedication to sustainability!
