How can I improve the quality of my scan?

One of our top priorities is to make sure that you’ll be able to clearly read your notes after you’ve scanned your Rocketbook. However, we sometimes get questions about how to improve the scan quality. Below, we share some tips that can help you get clear, crisp scans.

1. Scan at a 90 degree angle

While it’s possible to successfully scan a page at a slanted angle, we suggest scanning at a 90 degree angle above the page for the best output. This provides the right perspective for the camera lens.

2. Hold the phone steady

When you take a picture with a regular camera, you probably know that shaking will cause the picture to be blurry. That same principle applies when you scan your Rocketbook notebook. Our scanning algorithm compensates for some shaking, but if there’s too much, then you’ll get a blurry scan.

To keep your phone steady when scanning, it’s best not to grip the phone like you grip a cup of coffee. It’s best to just relax your hands and let your phone rest on your 4 fingers.

3. Ensure there’s good lighting

Good lighting allows the camera to see the contrasts between your handwriting and the paper. If it’s too dark, your scans will not be as crisp as they can be if you scan in a well-lit area.

4. Watch out for shadows

Sometimes we get emails from our community asking about weird, distorted shapes on their scans. Those distortions are actually caused by a shadow cast on the page. To counter this, just make sure that you’re not scanning right below a light source or else you’ll see the outlines of your head or phone.

5. Increase the scan resolution (Android only)

There are thousands of Android devices out there and many of them have different cameras. We oftentimes default to the device’s lowest resolution to ensure a fast scanning experience. However, you can actually increase the scan resolution for better results. Just note that the scanning process may take just a little bit more time.

To increase the scan resolution, just go to SettingsScan SettingsResolution. Then pick a higher one, preferably one with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Other notes

Cameras on mobile phones are typically better than those on tablets, so you’ll get better results on phones.

We’re currently working on improvements for color enhancements. There are certain colors that don’t show as well when we apply the image enhancement filter. If you’d like to turn off the enhancements and get a raw scan, just go to SettingsScan SettingsEnhancements, and select None.
