The Little Prince

Available on Netflix

Rating: PG

Director: Mark Osborne

Starring: the voices of Jeff Bridges, Mackenzie Foy, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard

I was supposed to read The Little Prince in a high school class many years ago. The book is slim and unassuming. It would have been easy to fulfill my duty. But high school Chad Durham was not what you would call “reliable” when it came to completing assignments. I never read it. Sadly, I still have not read it. Luckily, Mark Osborne adapted it for Netflix in 2016 and the movie is charming and beautiful. With beautiful music by Richard Harvey and Han Zimmer and inventine animation that manages to be low-key and enchanting in equal parts, Osborne’s adaptation is gorgeous. The script adds a frame story featuring a little girl (Mackenzie Foy), her mom (Rachel McAdams), and their neighbor The Aviator (Jeff Bridges), which serves to deepen the themes of the original narrative while still honoring them. I found myself completely compelled and ultimately moved by the subtly poignant story. Check it out if you have not been able to yet.
