The cycle continues
Just as we are assured the sun will rise in the morning, we are assured that there will be school shootings in September. The first shooting of the new school year happened in Winder, Georgia, on the school’s first day of school. Two students and two teachers were killed by a 14-year-old boy with an assault rifle. It’s the same story but a different place and time.
As usual, everyone is offering useless thoughts and prayers to the families of the deceased and injured, as well as the community. Also, as happens after every school shooting, Republican politicians say it isn’t the time to talk about legislation to stop the slaughter in our schools.
School shootings have become so commonplace that they no longer take up the majority of airtime on cable network news. In a few days, they’ll be reporting on the next mass murder of American schoolchildren.
In the meantime, Republican lawmakers at both the state and federal levels emphasize that the ready availability of weapons of war is not to blame. Instead, the lack of mental health services is the problem. In Congress, Republicans have voted down every sensible gun control law that has been introduced. One would think that they would overwhelmingly support increasing money for mental health services. But no, they…
