In the Mediterranean region in the very South of France, close to Perpignan and Spain is the famous medieval city of Collioure. It gets pretty busy in the summer but winter time is a good alternative.

There is great hiking along the coast as well as when going inland to reach the towers (e.g. Tour de Madeloc) on top of the main hills. Also why not get some good aperitifs with anchovies and Banyuls (think in the same family as “Porto” wine), the local specialties.
