It’s not illegal to lie. It’s also not illegal to pay people to lie for you.

It’s perfectly legal to own a social media company and tweak the algorithms so your own posts get 1,000% more viewership than anybody else’s. It’s also legal (thanks to Citizens United) for billionaires to flood the political landscape with huge chunks of money to spread disinformation that makes it virtually impossible to separate fact from fiction.

What havoc so-called “free speech” has wrought

In the name of “free speech,” we have chosen to accept constant lies from our political class. The usual refrain from the uninformed is something like, “They all do it.” But that is not true. This is a uniquely Republican approach.

Unfortunately, Americans are so disturbingly susceptible to disinformation that we no longer look beyond the surface — as long as what’s floating at the top of the garbage heap looks like it might benefit us, personally.

It isn’t just Trump, Vance, and Musk who don’t give a damn about the common good — it’s the entire Republican Party. If it benefits them, it’s good. If it doesn’t, it’s bad. It’s that simple.
