Open If The Worst Should Happen
We lost when it mattered most
It’s a dark day in America. An openly fascist leader has regained the reins of power in our country. He received a mandate from the American people, winning in a decisive manner and even likely taking the popular vote for the first time. He will probably have the opportunity to appoint a full majority to the Supreme Court between his two terms in office, so we cannot rely on judicial checks and balances. His party controls Congress, so the legislature will be at his beck and call as well, at least for the next two years.
He is unburdened from any concerns in terms of seeking re-election, so that not even this can serve to mitigate his actions. Moreover, with time to prepare, insidious political groups that want to push our nation towards their oppressive vision of white, Christian nationalism have built a playbook for him, which will work to streamline our descent into authoritarianism.
We who oppose this are not only scared and angry, but also tired. It has been eight years since one of our two major political parties was turned into a cult of personality, and we are now faced with at least another four years of this madness, and it promises to only intensify in the way it reaps havoc on our society.
