There is a persistent and recurring fantasy among liberals and other progressively-minded folks that conservatives and those to the right of center will eventually see the error of their ways and be forced to reconcile their fallacious beliefs with the cold reality of truth. If nothing else, we believe, history will be the final arbiter, and the long arc of justice will ultimately prevail. This, I believe, is a gravely dangerous assumption.
As a society, we are all too quick to believe that a simple collection of words, if put into the right order and aligned with our own biases, will represent the weight of truth. But what if the long arc of history does not bend toward justice, after all? What if that was a one-time thing? Looking at history to predict the future is a dubious proposition, especially if you are limiting yourself to the past few hundred years. Just because that’s what happened before doesn’t mean it’s now a law of nature. There is nothing to dictate that history will repeat itself, either for good or evil.
