True crime? Tick. Football? Tick.

There are an abundance of podcasts in both the true crime and football (soccer) genres. From Serial and The Hurricane Tapes to The Totally Football Show and the Football Ramble, there are no shortage of options for podcast fans.

It’s rare, though, to see a podcast that can tick both boxes. The Deadball Situation does just that.

Hosted by ex-In Bed With Maradona editor Stevie Green, the podcast explores crimes within the beautiful game.

Episode one kicks off with the story of Tommy Ball, a talented Aston Villa player who was murdered in 1923. It’s a gripping — and unexpected — tale, told brilliantly by Green in just 20 minutes.

With six episodes to date — including the wonderful and harrowing tale of Salvador Cabanas, one of the most exciting Paraguayan footballers of his generation — to feast your ears on, there’s plenty to get excited about.

The Deadball Situation may well go under the radar, with major players in both fields, but Green does a brilliant job of combining two often foreign genres. Give it a listen.
