Today, the two biggest platforms are Ethereum and NEO. Ethereum is the absolute market leader and NEO is an underdog.
However, Ethereum’s capable to deliver the speed of only 15 transactions per second. In comparison, NEO can process up to 10,000 transactions.
This feature is probably the most important one for us since we plan to host a huge number of transactions between fans, football clubs and bettors, each of which needs to be done as fast as possible. For instance, when two people want to create a wager over a soccer match, they would hardly be OK with waiting a lengthy period of time, like it can happen on Ethereum when the workload gets high there.
Such a drastic difference between the capabilities of the two platforms comes from the fact that NEO uses the more optimized consensus mechanism, called dBFT (Delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance), while Ethereum applies the standard proof of work concept. The dBFT enables the system to deliver higher speeds, while reducing the level of decentralization, which is totally acceptable for our transactions.
#2 Zero fees
The other advantage that NEO brings forward is literally zero fees. Since there are no “miners” like on Ethereum, there’s no need to pay fees.
We expect that the RSC ecosystem will host lots of micro-transactions in betting, sponsoring local soccer teams, exchanging value between communities, and paying for merchandise and tickets. Since we foresee lots of small-size transactions at our platform, any fees — even small ones — will be a problem.
#3 Development in various languages
Ethereum uses only one language, Solidity. There’s not many developers working with it and it can be hard to learn for novices. NEO, in comparison, enables to develop in various popular languages, such as C#, Java, and Python.
It’s important for RSC since we plan to incentivize other projects in soccer to build on top of our ecosystem, and finding the development talent seems to be a major bottleneck in projects like that. It’s great that NEO has solved this issue by deciding not to focus on any single language or develop a new one.
