Do you have a room in your home going through an existential crisis? That tiny little box room that has been accumulating stuff for years and years? It seems too tiny to be a proper bedroom, but at the same time it’s a waste of space, as it’s not serving any useful purpose.

Transforming a box room into a guest room — that you can rent on RoomForTea — can be easy, and also affordable.

A good starting point is to focus on how you want your finished space to feel like. This mindset will help you to let go of anything that doesn’t fit that vision. A good way to find inspiration is going on Pinterest and searching small bedrooms and then create your own mood board. This will give you a clear idea of what’s your style and what can be done within your space and budget.

A good mantra to have is “keep it simple”. The less you have, the easier it will be to maintain and the more space you will have.

You will only need a bed, a lamp with a bedside table, something to hang clothes and curtains to block the light. Anything else is extra and you should think twice before you decide to put it in the room. Although you might like colour and wall papers, this is a definite “don’t” in most cases, as it will make the room look smaller. White walls are always the safest bet.

Here are the 5 steps to make it happen.

  1. Go single

If your room is small, get a single bed instead. It’s better to have a good single, than no space to move around. You can also easily transform it in a day bed or sofa when you’re not renting it and use the room to relax, read or just have that afternoon nap.

2. Light it up

Good lighting is essential to create a relaxing atmosphere. This DIY floating side shelf table with copper pipe lamp is an affordable space saving option. Another way to space saving is to have wall lamps or lamps hanging from the ceiling next to the bed. The floating bed side table will clear floor space and will make the room feel larger.

3. Hang out

If you don’t have a wardrobe, the Fifti-fifti’s Spring simplifies the wardrobe into a wall-mounted clothes rail for a reasonable price (around £100).

Or if you want to get more arty, this wooden branch hanging from strings is a stylish alternative to the usual clothes rail. For a more rustic look, hang the branch from a sturdy rope or use steel wire for a sleeker feel — just make sure to fix your choice of rope to a ceiling joist.

4. Hook it up

Have some hooks or wall mounted hangers around the room. These don’t take much space and are always useful to hang clothes and other accessories. It’s also good to have one of those over door hooks, which are incredibly cheap and don’t require any installation, as they hang from the door.

5. Use your walls

Mount some small shelves close to the bed that can serve as a bedside table without taking the much needed floor space. These modular shelves by Studio Hausen are a great option.
