Crappy Produce At The Farmer’s Market — What Gives?

Do they really grow what they sell?

Your produce journey might be like mine.

You always considered farmer’s markets expensive. So, you treated them like a special occasion. Maybe as a splurge or your once or twice a month fruit and vegetable expenditure.

But then!

Two things happened simultaneously.

  • The quality of the produce at the supermarket started to deteriorate rapidly from an already substandard baseline.
  • The cost of the produce at the supermarket started to get — and remains — a lot more expensive.

So, you shifted to purchasing a majority of your produce at your local farmer’s market, supplementing what they don’t have or charge way too much for by picking up a few fruits and vegetables alongside shopping trips for your other groceries.

For the most part, this is working out for me.

Most issues I encounter are easy to swallow because I have visions of life in Spain dancing in my head. When my wife and I move there in January, we’ll be within walking distance of several well-stocked, fairly-priced and quality local neighborhood markets.
