Processed Food Just Tastes So Good
I began well, but lost my way
Let’s be honest. We all know that highly processed and ultra-processed foods are really bad for us.
But what did I feed myself and my kids yesterday? Instant breakfast protein shakes, the school’s pizza lunch, a grocery store rotisserie chicken, and a cake my brother dropped off because he got it on sale.
I never meant for our diets to become so dependent on highly processed foods. How did I let things deteriorate to this point?
I did try to begin as I meant to go on
I’m a big believer in the saying “begin as you mean to go on.” It’s simple and it makes sense.
My intentions were good. When my firstborn started eating solid foods, I used a healthy baby-food cookbook. I fondly remember making lentil stews and fruit purees and putting his meat through a little food mill.
My oldest was a good eater and mostly ate what I offered. But then my younger child arrived, and although he was a healthy baby, he was never a big eater. When he started solid food, he completely refused any of the meals I made for him involving lentils, beans, and even meat. He enjoyed dairy, and he ate a lot of fruit, and he was hitting all his growth milestones, so we didn’t worry.
