We Haven’t Ordered Food Delivery for Two Years

Spanish restaurants (and grocery stores) are that good

I’ve never been a fan of ordering food delivery.

It’s expensive, I like to cook, and if I want to eat at a restaurant I’ve been lucky to live in walkable cities with great options for most of my adult life.

So the thought of paying more to wait 45 minutes so I can eat subpar food alone in my house has never seemed like a sweet deal to me.

But I get that I’m in the minority on this one.

However, I didn’t realize how little my wife and I rely on food delivery until I started writing the second update to my annual Spanish Cost of Living article (coming soon!)

Because when I took a closer look at our spending categories over the past two years, I found that my wife and I haven’t ordered delivery since we moved to Spain in January 2023.

Not once.

And while that seems remarkable — even for me — there are three solid reasons why delivery isn’t nearly as common in Spain as it is in the US (although a wave of new delivery apps are gaining popularity).

And while it might sound inconvenient, the lack of food delivery is one of my favorite things about living in Spain. Here’s why.
