The Mu-Omega chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity defeated Delta Tau Delta Epsilon-Phi 42–33 in an intramural basketball game at the Pennington Student Activity Center on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University on Tuesday night.

Despite committing 12 turnovers in the first half, Kappa Sigma B team distanced themselves from Delta Tau Delta A team as they secured a 31–15 lead to head into halftime of the semi-final matchup. Pledge Kyle Lazaroe was a key contributor as he recorded 4 points and 6 rebounds to enter the half.

“As a team, we felt like we were in a good position to win. We didn’t feel laid-back, but we felt relaxed and focused that our main goal was to win this ball game for Kappa Sigma,” Lazaroe said.

Kappa Sigma B team head coach Denzel Jones said the team’s momentum was pleasant enough but could have been better.

“Lately we’ve been physically having our way with teams in intramural play, but it hasn’t always translated into wins. This team needs to understand that how hard you work is how great you can become,” Jones said.

As a four-seed, this team snuck its way into the playoffs and almost missed out on the chance to capture a championship win for their fraternity.

“As of now we are just thankful to be in this position to potentially advance to a championship and come away with a victory,” Jones noted. I love these boys with all of my heart, and I’ll go to war any day with this group of men. This is more than just a fraternity. We are invested in each other for life.”

Coach Jones was unhappy with his team’s execution as they suffered a 14–0 run by Delta Tau Delta A team at the beginning of the second half. Jones described the drought due to a lack of effort on defense, and several missed shot attempts.

“For some odd reason, this damn team couldn’t shoot. I’ve seen this unit shoot the lights out of the building before, but nothing fell in place at that time,” Jones said. “We constantly allowed our opponents to leak out on transition and score easy, wide-open layups, which nearly cost us the game,” said Jones.

The Kappa Sigma defense tightened up as the second half progressed, but they had a setback when a member of the Kappa Sigma crowd blew an air horn, resulting in a technical foul. Delta Tau Delta was rewarded technical free throws and possession of the ball following the call by the referee.

Push literally came to shove when Delta Tau Delta player Joey Verhaegh fouled Foster and proceeded to pick him up and aggressively throw him to the baseline. No technical foul was issued as the altercation immediately ended.

Despite the loss, Verhaegh was the prominent figure of his respective club as he finished with 14 points, 5 assists, and 8 rebounds.

Kappa Sigma pledge Shea Foster finished with 7 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 assists while Cameron Cabral finished with 6 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists to lead the B team to victory. B team will wrap up their season and play in the intramural basketball championship game against Kappa Sigma A team on Thursday.
