In the article, the author writes an academic book review of a book on human tribalism. Throughout the analysis, Jonathon Rauch writes phrases in support of the topics contained, but he later brings in outside research to counter the original argument with keywords such as “however” and references to scientific studies. It is clear that Rauch disagrees with the book author Amy Chua, but he keeps his dissent very professional and research based. Later on in the article, he does build in his own personal experience to appeal to his reader’s ethos, in order to receive more credibility for his viewpoint. Overall, the Washington Post article does a satisfactory job of using his book review on Amy Chua’s “POLITICAL TRIBES: Group Instinct and the Fate of Nations” to springboard his own opinions on the topic; he remains true to Chua’s original intentions and maintains a high level of respect for her work and her argument.
