Blog Post Number Four

Artificial intelligence has grown quickly in the past few years. I believe this has been and will be beneficial to humanity, however only in moderation. I am not one of the doomsayers Chiang refers to in his article, but I do understand the fear behind artificial technology. Nobody quite knows the power artificial technology could have and the thought of that is rather prettifying. Therefore, I am in favor of artificial intelligence and its advancements but I believe these advancements should be moderate and there should be no machine that could obtain power over human beings.

In the article “To Siri, With Love” written by Judith Newman the author focuses on artificial technology’s affect on her autistic son. Newman argues that this technology is vital and helpful to many individuals. Newman does not fear the advancement in technology and she uses pathos, which is an appeal to emotion, in order to persuade the readers to agree with her assertion. Chiang however had a completely different approach in his article, he spoke mostly of the doomsayers and how artificial technology is similar to Silicon Valley. Chiang has the viewpoint that Silicon Valley is against artificial technology because they believe it will take away capitalism. The author does not write of the positives and negatives of artificial intelligence, he writes of how it relates to corporations, and the aspects both corporations and artificial intelligence lack.

I believe Newman’s article was much more relatable and interesting then Chiang because it was related to the life of her son and it gave the reader something to think about. I am skeptical about artificial intelligence however after reading her article I now find myself believing artificial intelligence could be very beneficial.
