Journey across Africa, notes from Road
A diary begun much to late, but better late than never
Feel the urge to keep a more or less daily journal of a pilgrimage, an inner and outer Adventure that I’m on. I’m circling the world by motorcycle, doing it one continent at at a time, broken up by rest periods with my wife and boys.
I’ve traveled from the border of Canada down through the USA, Mexico and thru Central America to Costa Rica. At present, I’m traveling the African continent. Just completed a ride from Cape Town, South Africa to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Now I’m West Africa, in Dakar, Senegal specifically. I flew the bike over from Ethiopia yesterday. After some beach and touring time here, I’ll head north through Senegal, Mauritania, Western Sahara, and Morocco. I’ll cross over to Europe, to Spain, and that’s where I’ll store the bike until I’m ready to tackle the Asian continent.
Doing it solo for lots of good reasons, including: 1. I can stop to eat, pee, stretch, sightsee, dance — whenever I want to. 2. Easier to meet people when there’s only one of you. And the interactions tend to be deeper, more soulful, as you’re in a more vulnerable and open space. 3. Contemplative solitude suits me. Several more reasons I might touch on later.
Doing it sober, celebrating it one day at a time, as I have for the last 30 years since putting down my last drink. Trudging the road of happy destiny, feeling joyous and free — the blessings of joyful sobriety!
