Leadership/Politics Profile: Achieving Black History- Julius Malema of The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) of South Africa

In May, South Africa is heading to the polls. One of the key questions is the role Julius Malema and his party, the EFF, will play.

Julius Malema was born In March 1981, to a mother who worked as a housemaid, a job that rarely pays well in South Africa. His mother raised him as a single parent in the province of Limpopo. Over the years he worked his way up the African National Congress (ANC) structures till he became the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) President in 2008. His firebrand politics was instrumental in recalling the then ANC and South African President Thabo Mbeki. At the time, Thabo Mbeki was fighting for power with his vice president Jacob Zuma. Julius Malema was able to get the ANCYL to fully back Jacob Zuma in the fight and it ultimately led to Thabo Mbeki’s early exit from the presidency.

Even before his ascent to the presidency, Jacob Zuma was a flawed candidate at best. Not only was he facing corruption charges but a young woman came forward and accused him of rape. No matter the charge, Julius Malema was a loyal supporter and spat insults at anyone that tried to attack Jacob Zuma including the rape victim.

His unwavering support for Jacob Zuma won him favor and praise within Zuma’s circles, but that did not last. As the ANCYL President, Julius Malema was unapologetically abrasive and clashed with his seniors over various issues including:
