Floodgates Will Soon Mercifully Close for 2022 Election Ads

In recent weeks, northern Nevada residents have been swamped by ads online, text messages directly to their phones and doorbell rings at dinner time.

And then, there has been the ever mounting mailbox fill of candidate advertisements and endorsements.

An estimated $9 billion is being spent on political ads this election cycle nationally, making this year’s midterms coming to a close next week, the most expensive in U.S. history.

With competitive and decisive races taking place in Nevada, reports with various figures indicate the amount of money spent locally on political advertisements has been staggering. One example is the organization Club for Growth Action spending $2 million favoring challenger Adam Laxalt against incumbent Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto in what is being called the “single largest investment in Hispanic media in the race by any Republican group.”

Exact numbers will be released in a few weeks. But in the meantime, residents are wondering if all this money being spent is having an actual impact.

“Sad, it goes straight in the trash,” said Heather Alexander from Carson City.

“I don’t even look at them,” said Janine Tyler of Reno. “They all go into my recycling bin. I already know who I am voting for. I did my homework. I get the same ads over and over. It’s a waste of money and resources and significantly impacts the environment.”

There are areas along local apartment mailboxes such as above with flyers of all shapes, colors, and sizes strewn about. “They all seem to be desperate, it’s annoying,” said Jim Magnuson of Carson City.

The text messages also keep coming at all hours of the day and night. No matter how often you send that STOP text message or unsubscribe from emails and mailing lists, the digital political pleading also keeps coming.
