Drone, UAV or UAS? What’s the correct name?

We know that the naming conventions in the #drone industry could appear a bit confusing so it’s time for some clarification, once and for all.

If you find the article useful, feel free to #share it with your network and follow us on LinkedIn to stay informed on our latest news! 🚀

The drone naming convention is basically made of 3 key terms:

Drone

Drone is a general term which can refer to any uncrewed vehicle (vehicle without a person on board that can be remotely controlled, or fully autonomous in its navigation through the environment around), regardless of its operating environment (land, sea, or air).

An example of a vehicle that can be defined drone is the NASA Mars Exploration Rover, launched in 2003 to explore the Martian surface and geology.

Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV)

An Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle, commonly called UAV, is an aircraft remotely operated by a pilot located at a ground control station. It may operate with various degrees of autonomy, either under remote control by the remote pilot or autonomously by onboard computers, as an autopilot.

Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS)

Uncrewed Aerial System, commonly referred as UAS, is a term that identifies the entire operating system, including the UAV and associated support equipment, control station, data links, telemetry, communications, and navigation equipment, necessary for an UAV operation. In other words, everything that you need to fly a pre-planned mission in the field.
