I am proud to say that I am a huge Rihanna fan. She never fails to drop unique, catchy and relatable music, her stage presence is spectacular and her fashion style is extremely distinct. Furthermore, her well defined overall look and personality has allowed her to create a strong brand for herself. She’s partnered with many clothing brands such as Puma in order to create fresh and fashionable clothing which has been able to sell extremely well. Being a huge fan of hers, I one day decided to follow her Instagram page. After two days of constantly updating my feed, I became extremely aggravated with the constant repetitive posts that were constantly being published to her page. Rihanna knows how to do everything right EXCEPT for Instagram. Her page is just filled with annoying, continuous, inconsistent posts. Her posts consists of many different photoshoots that she takes part in. Although many would believe posting photo’s from multitude of photoshoots would be a good way for her to promote herself and her brand, Rihanna tends to post these photo’s far too frequently. By doing so, she fails to create a smooth and coherent aesthetic look on her page. For example, her most recent posts include 5 photo’s of her new Fenty shoe line all posted within the span of 24 hours. The number of posts that Rihanna put up for this one campaign she is involved with makes her followers feel overwhelmed and creates a very singular, transparent reasoning behind her posts. There is no meaningful reasoning to some of her photos. Although she’s using her Instagram platform as a way to market her products, her marketing strategies are flawed. She fails to incorporate meaningful and personal reflections of her life through her instagram page, which is one of the main reasons fans follow their favorite celebrities. A clear example of a celebrity who used her Instagram page that allowed her to market herself but give her fans a clear insight into her personal life is Beyonce’s pregnancy reveal. She perfectly timed the reveal to be close to her Grammy performance. By doing so, she not only hyped her fans, but all music lovers to anticipate a unique Grammy performance. Beyonce’s single post was so successful it became the most liked photo on Instagram ever. Although Rihanna has used her Instagram page to give her fans a more sincere insight into her personal life by posting photos of her father and her fans, the majority of the time she posts too many photo’s of her products as well as random memes. Although some of these posts allow her followers to get a clearer understanding of her personality and her personal views, it makes her Instagram page fail aesthetically. I believe that Rihanna fails to understand that Badgalriri is her personal Instagram page and not Puma’s Instagram page. It is fair to have her use her large following to promote her products, but her strategy is failing and, in my opinion, pushes followers away. On the other hand, many opinions that I’ve heard from friends was that Rihanna’s whole brand is: “I don’t give a f*ck”. Although the opinion is true, Rihanna has to keep in mind that her profile is viewed by millions of people who may not care for her inconsistent posts. As well, Instagram is also known by its users to have clear and aesthetically pleasing pages and posts, which Rihanna clearly fails to reach.
