BuzzFeed? Are you the future?
People across the world have mixed emotions about BuzzFeed. I get it. It’s an internet media platform filled with quizzes that tell us which yoga pose matches our personality, or articles about Kombucha being a magically healthy drink or not, and finally, videos where couples break up for a week, and come back stronger. Regardless of what you, or I, or anyone thinks, Buzzfeed is one of the world’s leading media entities. The company has more than a half a billion people at its reach across its various platforms, and has grown more than 65% in a year. If that doesn’t say the future, I don’t know what does.
BuzzFeed definitely doesn’t take the traditional mode of the “publication business model”, but the company does constantly experiment with subject matter and formats that ultimately grabs the consumer audience. The quizzes. That’s all I have to say. The quizzes that Buzzfeed offers on their website are yes, somewhat ridiculous, but the success they capture is undeniable, in which the outcome is more than 150 million unique visitors per month on the site. BuzFeed’s articles are also quite good- surprising right. They are always well reported and thought out to a tee. BuzFeed’s videos also take the cake, not only on their website but on YouTube as well, where they have all different types of content. The platform where I think they surprise me the most is on Snapchat. I am never one to click on those stories from companies or websites, but I always seem to find myself scrolling through the BuzzFeed, feed (haha, feed-feed). In any case, I guess they caught me red handed.
The only thing that is concrete in our present day is that nothing is completely permanent. BuzzFeed embraces the reality of the ever-changing changing media landscape, by staying ahead of changing trends or opportunities to seek. Whether you like BuzzFeed, love it, hate it, or don’t care about it at all, they have built a force to be reckoned with in the digital age. They have the hunger, the ambition, the content, the depth, and the talent to stay on top. An investor of BuzzFeed by the name of Lerer, showcased the site in the best possible words during an interview with fortune.com, “There’s nothing cratering in the industry. It’s better than ever. It’s just different. And if you want to succeed, you have to open your eyes and realize how it’s different, and take advantage of it”. That’s just what BuzzFeed does, takes advantage of what’s missing in the digital word, be a little crazy, create content that draws people and in and leaves them excited.
To me BuzzFeed isn’t just some untraditional site. It breaks barriers. Pushes us towards the future. Puts us in the mindset that un conventional or different is good, and to take advantage of it. I believe there will be a future with BuzzFeed, and I think I really like that. Different is good, open your mind to it. That’s what FUTURE is all about anyways.
