Is BuzzFeed the future of media? If so, ask yourself this: Is that even a good thing? IS IT?
Buzzfeed! These days you can’t talk about anything media related without at least someone bringing up that website. According to them, Buzzfeed is “a cross-platform, global network for news and entertainment that generates seven billion views each month…creates and distributes content for a global audience and utilizes proprietary technology to continuously test, learn and optimize”. Buzzfeed is basically the site that caters to the people who enjoy lists, the nostalgic group, the ones with short attention spans and the people who “hate white men” (no I’m not joking there was a woman who worked for them that openly hated white men).
The reason why I consider Buzzfeed to be different from other news sites is because it carries a vibe that differs from that of more professional news companies and news sites. Buzzfeed has an appearance of being a more informal and “young” site that gets the attention of today’s youth. One main theme they use that professional sites don’t use are memes. Memes are now the hip and modern style to express opinions, feelings, emotions and even news itself. Even when Donald Trump got elected people started updating the Aladdin meme and now we have this:
A simple method. Just a photo of a well known Disney animated film with a short caption and automatically we already know what this meme is even talking about.
So this brings me to the question, Is Buzzfeed the future of media. The answer is obvious, yes it is. However, is that even a good thing. Yes…and FUCK NO!!!!!!!!
Yup that’s right I’m saying Buzzfeed is the future of media and that’s not a good thing…sort of.
First let me get the “fuck no” aspect out of the way and explain why Buzzfeed being the future of new media is not a good thing. I’ll narrow it to two simple reasons, spreading necessary hate and the beginning of the fall of professionalism.
Buzzfeed, if you really pay attention, has become a base for SJWs and white/man haters to implicitly put in people’s heads that the white men are the enemy. But no surprise, we live in a world now where some people believe strongly that White men, straight men and men in general are the reason why our world is in a shitty state (spreading discrimination, racism and other emotion responses)
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all about equality and I think racism, discrimination against races and sexualities is bullshit. It’s not cool. However, when you start bashing the very people you hate and start accusing one whole group (aka whites) of being a certain way, then you have become a hypocrite and are no better than the very people you hate.
“Herwin, what the fuck? Now you’re talking random nonsense and are going on an unrelated topic that’s not Buzzfeed you mansplainer!!!” (Said any triggered reader). Well calm the hell down because there’s a point to all this.
Well reason one kind of ties in together with reason two, lack of unprofessionalism, but I’ll get more into that in a second.
Going back into the SJW bullshit, Buzzfeed has a history of doing lists of whatever. But the particular ones that I find WTF worthy is youtube buzzfeed videos such as “## questions for white people” or whatever questions for males or whites or white males or straight people, etc. I’ve watched some of these videos and it’s basically some SJW bullshitters asking random questions that have no logic and say white stereotypes that don’t apply to everyone. No seriously, go to their youtube channel, and look for those videos and you’ll see what the hell I’m even talking about. Here I’ll get you started…
Watch these videos and you’ll see why I went on a rant about Buzzfeed being man haters and white haters. And keep in mind I’m a minority myself. I am a hispanic. However, I “looked” white so that puts me in the Ultimate Hate List as well.
Oh and also I should mention a former employee of buzzfeed, Scaachi Koul. She was a writer for Canadian Buzzfeed who wrote on her personal Twitter that Buzzfeed was recruiting. However, she got a bit discriminatory by saying “@Buzzfeedcanada would particularly like to hear from you if you’re not white and not male”. What the fuck? That doesn’t sound like fair equality, it just sounds like discrimination. Oh but wait, it’s white people so it’s not racist at all. And yes I am being sarcastic. On top of that this woman says later on that White men can still pitch and she will read and consider it but will be less interested because “ugh, men”. But this is just my word. I suggest you should watch the very video that brought this information to my attention:
This former Buzzfeed employee also helps make my next point to why Buzzfeed is unprofessional.
Buzzfeed is a site that tends to plagiarize their work, take random popular memes and passes it off as writing. As well, Buzzfeed also makes too much clickbait posts.
Memes are not bad, don’t get me wrong. Buzzfeed using memes is what’s keeping them popular and it is possible to be professional while using memes. Just like Star Wars where lightsabers are only sed during important scenes (excluding the prequels), memes can be a great thing to use to get people’s attention in delivering news as long as it is used sparingly, ie. only when it is necessary to use or if it fits well. Buzzfeed overuses them like crazy. Don’t believe me, go to any random Buzzfeed post.
Overall, Buzzfeed is pretty unprofessional for the reason what they don’t always do professional writing, oversaturate their main arsenal (memes), sometimes plagerize, are inaccurate with some of their lists (ie every nostalgic list post they’ve ever made) and they hire unprofessional workers who use their position to bash on a gender and a specific race just because they feel like they can.
But regardless of what I said above, I don’t think Buzzfeed is all that bad. Just like the Transformers movies, it does have “some” redeeming qualities. Their use of memes are smart when used correctly, they do a good job in attracting a younger audience that isn’t that engaged in regular news, cater to the people with short attention spans and I’ll admit I like some of the Nostalgia posts regardless of its inaccuracy. Buzzfeed has the potential to be a great new form of media. The internet era we live in allows the struggling people trying to make something for themselves to show the world what they can come up with; what they can invent to revolutionize the world for the better.
Buzzfeed, you guys have the tools to be a better version of yourselves. You have secured the future of media. But for the love of God, improve your editing, your writing, use memes more sparingly so that they can be appreciated for its purpose, and PLEASE start choosing your employees/workers more wisely. We don’t need more hate in the web let alone this world.
