Okay, how many of you have actually watched James Corden on television, or even know what channel/time he’s on?

James Corden, host of The Late Late Show with James Corden, is slowly but surely conquering YouTube. His YouTube stats may not be as high as fellow late night host, Jimmy Fallon’s, but his presence online is not going unnoticed. James’ channel has a staggering 9 million followers and over 2 billion views — a following that was built in a little under two years and continues to climb. Combine this with his genuine personality that connects brilliantly with his guests, and we’ve really got something here! Not every other late night host makes you feel completely engrossed in their segments the way Corden does. But not only is he really entertaining, he’s actually really talented! I mean, did you see Adele’s face when while they were singing Hello?! We are all Adele in this moment, unbelievably amazed by his talent.

But there’s more to this Tony award winner than his vocal abilities, he is the relatable guy with the British accent that everyone wants to be friends with. It’s obvious that he provides a safe space for celebrities to really be themselves, or even step out of their elements. I mean where else can you see Adele rapping Nicki Minaj’s verse from Monster, or Kendall Jenner drinking Clam Juice because her sister didn’t show, or even Harry Styles getting “Late Late” tattooed on his arm?!? What can’t this man get his celeb friends to do?

I think part of Corden’s appeal is that he comes across so genuinely. You can tell that this puts his guests at ease and allows them to laugh sincerely and truly enjoy themselves on his show. This in turn allows us, the audience, to connect so easily with him and his content. Obviously segments like Carpool Karaoke have been a huge success and Corden’s producer, Ben Winston, has used YouTube views as a gauge of a segment’s success. and has praised YouTube as the right platform for their digital strategy and how important their content on YouTube has become. They have prioritized their digital platform on YouTube over the actual television show. With YouTube TV in production, James and his team are capitalizing early on television integrating itself into the digital content style.

It’s great to see that new and interesting content is being given an opportunity to shine on YouTube. Corden’s talent and personality shine through his content and will continue to do so if he provides his guests with a comfortable space to be themselves, which is all the audience really wants to see. I personally enjoy this content more because the guests look like they’re having a good time — which is sometimes really hard when they are trying to promote their new movie/tv show/album/whatever. Corden and his team has created innovative segments that stray from the normal “YouTube style” challenges that some talk show hosts have incorporated to reinvent their shows. With segments like Carpool Karaoke, Pass the Mic, and Late Late Live Tinder, James’ ability to engage differently with his guests shows off his own talents and some hidden talents of the guests. I don’t know much about Cara Delevigne, but I do know she’s got some witty humour and secret rapping abilities — all from her Pass the Mic segment:
