Now everyone’s wishing to find a dead worm in their cucumber

Alex from Target was cute but I think Ellen really should have gotten Rob from Tesco on her show. We could all use a lesson on how to honour a fellow member of our ecosystem, our planet — a worm.

Not just any worm. A cucumber worm, whose life was tragically lost to suffocation under cling wrap. The warning labels were right — keep children away from plastic bags.

But I gotta say that the customer Mr Wes Metcalfe did give Rob a little boost with his tongue-in-cheek complaint on Tesco’s Facebook page. If Rob had used the usual “Thank you for your feedback. We sincerely apologise for our mistake.”, it’d just be like leaving a handshake in the air. Now where’s the fun in that?

I think the internet was thankful that Rob decided to have a little fun at work — as refreshing as it was for him, it was for Wes and other eager onlookers too.

Rob sure gave Shakespeare a run for his money.

The bromance just keeps getting stronger. And Rob just keeps getting more talented.

But let’s not forget the real stuff. Gift cards, and coming back to Tesco ;)

Condolences must be said. Top that off with a eulogy, too.

I truly find it hard not to chuckle at every reply, even after reading this for the second time!

Rob’s attention to detail, his authentic response and humour definitely resonated with customers like Wes, who was really out to have some fun (and get his compensation). By being #real with their customers, Rob gave a more human touch to what would have been just another faceless conglomerate. With social media, customers now expect a two-way response with brands. So what better way than to take it up a notch and be friends. (Did I just rhyme like Rob did?)

This planned content by Rob really put Tesco out there and gained Wes’ lifetime customer value, even though everything started from well.. food contamination.

But as with anything viral and refreshing, other brands have to step it up with a new game, please.
