Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. We all know him. We all love him. My first memory of this American national treasure was in the movie Get Smart starring Anne Hathaway and Steve Carell. What a great first impression. Since then Johnson has gone on to star in many other quality movies such as Tooth Fairy, San Andreas and around 50,000 Fast and Furious movies.

In May 2017 in an interview with GQ, Dwayne Johnson dropped the first hints that he would be interested in running for President of the United States.

A week later while hosting Saturday Night Live, The Rock revealed his 2020 presidential campaign alongside another American National Treasure, Tom Hanks. This is when people started believing that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson could and would actually run against Donald Trump in the next election. He fuelled those beliefs even more in December when he appeared with Kevin Hart on Ellen. Ellen asks “Seriously, would you run?” and the Rock responds “I’m seriously considering it. Yes.” and the audience goes wild. So now that Johnson is “seriously considering it”, the question is…

Could Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson be the next American President?

The Rock has had wild success over the last few years and this is because he is a hit in “all four quadrants” meaning he is successful among old men, old women, young men and young women. So he has the right demographics (also known as basically all of them), could this help him win the popular vote? Is the popular vote enough? It wasn’t for Hillary…

Donald Trump is notorious for sharing his mind on Twitter, and this has proved to be an issue within the white house and congress. Will Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s social media presence come to his aid or his demise in the campaign? With 12.5 million followers on Twitter, 58 million followers on Facebook and 99.5 million followers on Instagram, The Rock has an impressive total of around 170 million followers on Social Media whereas Donald Trump has around 78.6 million combined from all three platforms.

Having almost 100 million more followers could come as an advantage to Dwayne Johnson. He is very active on every platform which he posts on daily. His posts vary from behind the scene shots, videos of him and his family to straight up inspirational workout shots. Having such a large Social Media Presence could help Dwayne get his platforms message out to all of his supporters. By having a widespread social media following he will be reaching out to many different demographics.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been in the public eye for over twenty years. While that may be beneficial because people feel a personal or emotional connection, this also may backfire on his presidential efforts. For example, The Rocks political identity has shifted over the years. In 2000- Johnson spoke at the Republican National Convention but also attended the Democratic National Convention. He is now allegedly registered as an independent. Could this hurt his possible “loyalty” to whatever party he decides to run for?

We’ve entered a new age where nominating celebrities for a presidency has become somewhat normal. So if this is where America is headed, it seems that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson could actually run for President and be somewhat succesful. Well that’s to be determined…
